Bad Breath Is No Fun

Bad Breath Is No Fun For Comstock Park Residents

Bad Breath is No Fun

Picture this: You are starting a new job and are going to meet with your new boss for the first time. Confidence is key to your success. Your broad confident smile exposes rows of pearly white teeth, but when you open your mouth to exchange greetings, you worry about bad breath.

Perhaps your breath is not as a pleasant as you had hoped. Regular dental checkups at Stewart & Hull Aesthetic & General Dentistry can help alleviate your concern over bad breath. We have been addressing bad breath since 1974.

Causes

The technical term for bad breath is halitosis. Many factors can cause or contribute to halitosis. One of these factors is the food you eat. Onions and garlic are both known for having a potent effect on your breath. Other factors to consider include dry mouth, tobacco use, and harmful health concerns such as infections.

Bad breath usually originates in your mouth. Transient bad breath can be resolved through eating or brushing, and is a temporary condition usually associated with a dry mouth. Persistent bad breath can be caused by chronic dry mouth issues. It is made worse when food is not cleared away properly.

Solutions

  • Brushing and flossing daily is a key step in curing bad breath. Food particles can build up in your mouth and foster bacteria.
  • Simply observing the foods you eat  can result in a change in your breath.
  • Regular checkups can also reduce or eliminate the progression of bad breath.

Replacement for Missing Teeth With Dental Implants and Dental Bridges

When people are missing teeth and want to know about tooth restoration, we usually tell them about dental bridges or tooth implants.  Tooth replacements can replace one or more missing teeth and prevent adjoining teeth from gradually shifting and can help correct bite problems

A dental bridge is an artificial tooth that replaces a missing tooth. The false tooth (called a “pontic”) is fused to porcelain crowns on either side of the missing tooth.

Tooth replacement has been a highly requested procedure at our dental practice. Most popular are dental implants. A dental implant consists of a titanium post surgically inserted into the jaw bone to replace the root of the missing tooth. The post integrates with the bone over a period of approximately three months to provide a stable foundation for the replacement tooth. At that time, a smaller post is attached that extends above the gum line. The artificial tooth (crown) is then attached. The entire process takes several months, but consistently yields wonderful results for our patients.

Please call Stewart and Hull Aesthetic and General Dentistry at 616-723-8631 to schedule a complimentary consultation with Dr. Stewart and Dr. Hull.  We look forward to hearing from you.

What Can Porcelain Veneers Do For You?

Veneers Create Stunning Smiles in Rockford, MI

Is your tooth enamel worn and thin? Tooth-colored porcelain veneers have the brilliance and translucency of healthy tooth enamel. Many Belmont, Comstock Park, Grand Rapids, Sparta, Walker and Rockford, MI, dental patients have received veneers to cover worn enamel. Some believe they look twenty years younger!

Have your teeth developed uneven edges? Tooth grinding, natural wear and other factors can roughen tooth edges. Veneers are a minimally invasive correction for uneven tooth edges. Veneers can transform your smile without significant restorative dental work.

Do you have chips or cracks in your teeth? If your teeth are otherwise healthy, veneers provide a flawless tooth surface. Are your teeth yellow or gray? Veneers can fix that, too. Veneers can be fabricated in any shade to perk up your smile while still blending naturally with your other teeth and skin tones.

Porcelain veneers are thin, tooth-shaped covers that are affixed to the front of teeth. Veneers are strong, natural looking, and one of the most affordable cosmetic dentistry procedures. Of course, a tooth with extensive damage may need a dental crown.

At Stewart and Hull Aesthetic and General Dentistry, we would be happy to show you what veneers can do for you. Stewart and Hull Aesthetic and General Dentistry is located at 769 York Creek Dr NW in Comstock Park. We provide premium dental care for many of your friends and neighbors in Belmont, Comstock Park, Grand Rapids, Sparta, Walker and Rockford, MI area. Our phone number is 616-723-8631.

Orthodontic Solutions You Can Live With

http://www.greatmismiles.com/invisalign-clear-braces/If your teeth aren’t as straight as you’d like, the good news is that you have options that have nothing to do with a mouth full of metal wires and brackets. Enter Invisalign.

The name Invisalign is an apt description of what this technologically advanced system does: align teeth invisibly. With Invisalign, patients receive custom plastic aligners that fit snugly over the teeth. Every couple of weeks, as the teeth move, the patient changes the aligners. Patients appreciate the fact that Invisalign trays are barely noticeable and they don’t restrict a normal diet. It is also beneficial that they are easy to keep clean.

If you have an event or need to be photographed, you can remove the aligners for short periods of time, but still continue with your treatment. It is important, however, that you commit to wearing the aligners every day for at least 22 hours if your treatment is going to be successful.

For an evaluation of your orthodontic needs call 616-723-8631 to schedule an appointment with Dr. Stewart and Dr. Hull at Stewart and Hull Aesthetic and General Dentistry.

At Stewart and Hull Aesthetic and General Dentistry, we are zealous about first rate dental care including comprehensive restorative and cosmetic dentistry. In addition to Invisalign, ask us about porcelain veneers and dental implants. Whether you need an exam and cleaning or a complete smile transformation, we look forward to serving you.

Dental Crowns For Replacing Weakened Or Damaged Teeth

dental crowns Comstock Park

It might surprise a lot of people to know that dental crowns have been used in dentistry for more than 2000 years. According to archeologists, the Etruscans experimented with crowns on teeth using ivory and bone as early as 700 B.C. By 200 A.D., materials became more sophisticated and they began using gold crowns to construct artificial teeth. There is evidence that the ancient Egyptians made tooth replacements out of seashells, shaping them and then hammering them into their gums.

Porcelain crowns were first used in the 1800s. After the refinement of metal casting methods in the 1900s, crown dentistry began to improve dramatically.

Today, crowns are strong, comfortable, and made to match your surrounding teeth.

Dental crowns cover the entire visible portion of the tooth above the gum line and are cemented in place after the tooth is treated. Crowns are used to strengthen teeth that have been worn down or weakened by decay or injury. Crowns are also used to brighten and improve the appearance of one’s smile.

If you suspect you need a crown, want to replace an old crown, or want to learn about other cosmetic dentistry procedures, please call Dr. Stewart and Dr. Hull at 616-827-7019. Stewart and Hull Aesthetic and General Dentistry is located at 769 York Creek Dr NW in Comstock Park. We have been serving patients in the Belmont, Grand Rapids, Sparta, Walker and Rockford, MI area since 1974. We can recommend the best tooth restoration or cosmetic dentistry option for you.

Treatment For Stress-Induced Jaw Pain In Comstock Park

stress-induced jaw pain in Comstock ParkEveryday problems cause some Comstock Park people to respond by clenching their jaw or grinding their teeth. For example, daily commuting in Belmont, Cedar Springs, Comstock Park, Grand Rapids, Sparta, Walker and Rockford, MI can take a physical toll. All the traffic, noise, and perpetual road construction causes some people to grind their teeth as they navigate the sea of cars on packed highways.

Teeth grinding and jaw clenching can cause a painful condition called TMD or Temporomandibular Joint Disorder. TMD is often mistakenly called ‘TMJ’: the acronym for Temporomandibular Joint.

Your jaw is able to open and close thanks to many jaw muscles and the intricate temporomandibular joints. These joints allow for fluid mobility as you chew, speak, and yawn.

Damage to these essential joints can lead to extreme pain in the jaw, head, face and neck. Pain may be experienced on one or both sides of the jaw.

TMD is an often misdiagnosed condition because facial pain can result from a variety of issues, not just damage to the temporomandibular joints. Sinus infections, tooth decay, and facial injuries can cause jaw pain. A correct diagnosis is the first step in treating TMD.

At Stewart and Hull Aesthetic and General Dentistry we have been diagnosing and treating TMD since 1974, working with other specialists when needed. If you are experiencing clicking, popping, or discomfort in your jaw, call Stewart and Hull Aesthetic and General Dentistry today for a diagnosis and treatment plan.

Dr. Stewart and Dr. Hull are dedicated to providing high-quality dentistry to the residents of Belmont, Cedar Springs, Comstock Park, Grand Rapids, Sparta, Walker and Rockford, MI.

Stewart and Hull Aesthetic and General Dentistry not only treat TMD, but we redesign smiles with unprecedented cosmetic dental smile makeovers. Furthermore, we offer general dentistry, cosmetic dentistry, and porcelain veneers.

Your smile is contagious! Make sure it is healthy and beautiful. Call Stewart and Hull Aesthetic and General Dentistry today at 616-723-8631 to schedule a consultation or examination.

Not All Smile Makeovers Are Created Equal

Sparta cosmetic smile makeover

Hello Comstock Park! Welcome to the Stewart and Hull Aesthetic and General Dentistry dental blog. Let’s talk about smile transformations. Some Belmont, Comstock Park, Grand Rapids, Sparta, Walker and Rockford, MI patients wonder if the term is synonymous with general cosmetic dentistry.

Are the placement of four veneers considered a smile makeover? Well, yes and no. If your smile is attractive and healthy except for some chips in your upper front teeth, veneer placement may remedy the few cosmetic problems and result in a celebrity-caliber smile.

Generally, however, a complete smile redesign combines several carefully-chosen cosmetic dentistry procedures performed at the same time for a complete smile renewal. In other words, the sum is greater than the parts.

For example, a cosmetic dental smile makeover could involve crown restorations, veneers for teeth that are misshapen but otherwise healthy, tooth-colored filling replacement for old amalgam fillings, and teeth whitening for the crowning touch.

Dr. Stewart and Dr. Hull. We have been practicing general and cosmetic dentistry in Comstock Park, Michigan since 1974. Performing successful smile makeovers makes our profession extremely fulfilling. Patients who plan to receive a smile makeover should take their time choosing a dentist to perform it. We invite you to schedule a complimentary consultation so we can discuss your needs and wishes. During the consultation, we can tell you about our extensive experience and show you before and after pictures of satisfied patients.

When we design a custom smile makeover, we study several elements in addition to the teeth. After all, the teeth are just one component of the patient’s face. The gumline, lips, mouth, facial shape, facial structure, coloring, and patient’s age affect the scope of the design. This comprehensive approach to a smile makeover achieves incredible results and sets our practice apart.

If you are interested in learning more about smile transformations, call us today at 616-723-8631.

6 Ways Dental Crowns Restore Comstock Park Smiles

cost of dental crowns Comstock Park

Dental crowns have been around a long time, but they continue to play an important role in Grand Rapids cosmetic dentistry. A dental crown, often called a cap, covers the visible part of the tooth.

Dental crowns are used for several problems common among Grand Rapids cosmetic dentistry patients:

  • An old crown that is damaged or ill-fitting
  • A broken tooth
  • A tooth with extreme decay
  • A tooth that has had a root canal
  • A tooth that is too small or misshapen
  • A tooth that prevents a proper bite

A dental crown serves both structural and aesthetic purposes. It protects a natural tooth from additional decay and damage while permitting normal function. In addition, a dental crown often prevents the need for an extraction and the bone loss that can occur with a missing tooth.

Patients who get a dental crown should not assume that the tooth is now invincible. Crowns need daily cleaning and flossing just like natural teeth. The remaining tooth structure just around the gumline could still become decayed and the soft tissue around the crown is susceptible to gum disease. Chewing hard foods or using your teeth as a tool can cause a crown to crack or break. (Use scissors to open a stubborn plastic package – don’t bite and pull!) Dr. Stewart and Dr. Hull can advise you on caring for your new crown so that it will last as long as possible. Some of our Belmont, Comstock Park, Grand Rapids, Sparta, Walker and Rockford, MI patients have crowns that are still looking beautiful after ten years.

If you would like to hear more about options to restore your smile, call our office to schedule a complimentary consultation today.

Filtered Comstock Park Water And Oral Health

Filtered Comstock Park Water And Oral Health

A simple way for Rockford, MI, residents to choose beverages that won’t harm their teeth is to keep it simple and make water their go-to drink. However, for safety, thrift, and convenience, many dental patients choose to drink bottled water or filter it themselves at home.

Filtered water can be detrimental to oral health if it doesn’t contain fluoride, which is a great tooth decay preventer.

If you choose bottled water and are wondering if any naturally occurring fluoride has been removed, you can check the label. If you prefer to filter your own tap water, look to see if the American Dental Association has given the filter its seal of approval.

Water filters that carry the ADA seal don’t remove fluoride, so you can be sure that the fluoride is still in your water and benefitting your teeth.

We are Drs. Dr. Stewart and Dr. Hull, experienced Comstock Park dentists serving the Grand Rapids, Walker, and Sparta areas. We are passionate about helping our patients have healthy mouths and beautiful smiles. 10 Terrific Tooth Tips From Stewart and Hull Aesthetic and General Dentistry

cost of dental crowns Rockford MI

1. If you have kids and your municipal water supply does not have the recommended level of fluoride, talk to your pediatrician about fluoride supplements. Fluoride strengthens both the teeth you can see and the ones still forming in the jaw.
2. Set a timer when you brush to make sure you spend at least two minutes thoroughly (but gently!) cleaning all surfaces. Don’t forget your tongue – it provides a cozy home for bacteria to flourish.
3. Floss before you brush so that tooth bristles can better reach between teeth.
4. If you can’t brush after a meal, chew some sugarless gum with xylitol. Xylitol may curb the growth of bacteria on your teeth to reduce plaque formation.
5. Eat carbohydrates with meals instead of alone as snacks. More saliva is generated while eating a meal and this can lessen the effects of carbs sitting on your teeth.
6. An oral fluoride rinse used right before bedtime adds an extra measure of decay deterrence. Fluoride rinses (not traditional mouthwash) work best when swished over teeth for at least thirty seconds after flossing and brushing. After spitting it out, don’t rinse with water. Let the residue protect and strengthen your enamel all night long. This is especially important for kids – just make sure they don’t swallow it.
7. If you have diabetes, it is important to understand that unhealthy blood sugar levels can increase your risk of tooth decay and gum disease. Your dentist can help you maintain oral health in spite of your condition. If you have already experienced dental complications related to diabetes, schedule a consultation with Dr. Stewart and Dr. Hull by calling (720) 306-8057.
8. Beware of the dental risks of chronic dry mouth (xerostomia). Continual saliva production is essential for keeping the mouth lubricated, washing the food from tooth surfaces, and neutralizing the acid caused by plaque. Decongestants, blood pressure medications, antidepressants, and painkillers are some of the medications that can cause dry mouth. Dr. Stewart and Dr. Hull can help you protect your teeth if you live with this unpleasant condition.
9. Wearing a mouthguard when you participate in sports can prevent tooth injury. Our office offers custom mouthguards that fit perfectly.
