Dental Implants: Beneficial for Many Ages

Categories: Dental Implants

While dental implants have been around for over forty decades, today’s dental implants are better than ever and are becoming the standard of care for people missing teeth in the Comstock Park, Rockford, Michigan and Greater Grand Rapids area. Implant technology has improved exponentially over the years and continues to improve. Dental implants provide excellent esthetics, superb chewing function and are biocompatible.

While you may not think of teenagers as needing dental implants, it is not an unusual situation. It is not uncommon for children to be born missing a permanent tooth. Once a person’s jaw development is complete, dental implants can be successfully placed to replace the genetically missing tooth. Often this can be done in the late teenage years, or at the latest, the early twenties. After the implant has healed a very natural-looking dental ceramic crown is placed over the implant. It is likely that a properly restored implant would be impossible for someone to detect when looking at a patient from the Comstock Park, Rockford, MI or greater Grand Rapids area who has had a dental implant at the office of Stewart & Hull.

Dental implants are also the treatment of choice when replacing a tooth that had to be extracted or is missing due to an accident. Rather than remove tooth structure from two healthy teeth on either side of a missing tooth to make a dental bridge, an implant can be placed in the open position and the other teeth remain untouched. This is frequently the option chosen by patients in the Comstock Park office of Dr. Bruce Stewart and Dr. Eric Hull.

Dental Implants are also an excellent option for people needing dentures. Implants can be placed in a few strategic locations and the denture is then fixed to the implants. This implant-retained denture has a higher level of stability than an ordinary denture.

So if you are missing teeth, whether you are 18 or 80 (or any age), contact the office of Stewart & Hull to see what our doctors can do to help you. Our dedication to continuing education and technology allows us to always provide our patients in the greater Grand Rapids, Mi area with the best implant systems available.

The Science of Dental Implants Has Greatly Improved

Categories: Dental Implants

In 1952, Per-Ingvar Branemark accidentally discovered that bone integrates with titanium while conducting a completely different experiment that had to do with blood flow characteristics. During the experiment, the scientist had to implant titanium into the bones of rabbits to be able to conduct his experiment. At the end of his project, he went to remove these implants that he had placed but he couldn’t remove them very easily. He discovered that the bone and the titanium had integrated together, and he coined the term “osseointegration” to explain the phenomenon. From this discovery, the world of hip replacements, knee replacements and our favorite dental implants opened.

Since the discovery of osseointegration, there have been multiple advances that have improved the success rate of single dental implants and implant supported dentures. One of the advances is the finish of the titanium on the dental implant. Initial dental implant procedures utilized titanium screws with a very smooth surface. Dentists now use implants with a treated surface that leaves a porous finish and inherently increases the surface area available for integration.

Dental implants have come a long way and they are becoming less expensive. If you are considering dental implants, be sure to discuss your options with Dr. Stewart and Dr. Hull at Stewart & Hull for the best possible results when it comes to dentures or missing teeth.

Raise Your Dental IQ In Grand Rapids

Raise Your Dental Health IQ In Grand Rapids

There are many simple things that the average Grand Rapids area resident can do to raise their Dental IQ and improve their dental health. One simple lesson involves bacteria, and everyone’s mouth has a lot of it.

But, don’t worry, bacteria per se isn’t the problem. Dental problems occur when the balance of bacteria becomes unhealthy. This is where brushing and flossing might come into play. Another precaution you can take to guard against the wrong kind of bacteria is to keep your toothbrush as far away from the toilet as possible and close the lid of the toilet before you flush.

Make sure to wash your hands before you brush and floss. No exceptions!

When it comes to a good toothbrush, don’t get sentimental. The American Dental Association recommends replacing your toothbrush every three to four months. If you can avoid the unhealthy balance of bacteria in your mouth, you can avoid gum disease, tooth decay, as well as bad breath.

If you can avoid decay, it’s less likely that you will need more extensive dental work such as dental implants and crowns.

Dr. Bruce Stewart and Dr. Eric Hull are passionate about helping cosmetic dentistry patients have healthy mouths and beautiful smiles. If you would like to know more about a custom smile makeover in Rockford MI, Comstock Park, Grand Rapids or the surrounding areas, give us a call at 616-827-7019 and a member of our very friendly and educated staff will answer any questions you have and schedule a consultation at your convenience.

Cosmetic Dental Solutions in Comstock Park

Categories: Cosmetic Dentistry

Cosmetic Dental Solutions in Comstock Park Comstock Park cosmetic dentists use dental crowns to solve a number of dental dilemmas. A dental crown is a strong, natural-looking permanent tooth restoration that covers the top of the damaged tooth.

Grand Rapids area family dentistry practices recommend crowns to remedy the following problems:

  • A broken tooth with decay
  • An ill-fitting existing crown
  • A decayed tooth that has lost significant tooth structure
  • A tooth that has had a root canal
  • A tooth that is too small or misshapen
  • A tooth that causes a bite problem

Before your Grand Rapids area dentist can attach the crown to your tooth, we must prepare the tooth. Family dentists often apply a local anesthetic so you won’t feel pain during the prepping. Dr. Bruce Stewart or Dr. Eric Hull will remove decay, if any, and shape the tooth to receive the crown. Then a mold is taken of the prepped tooth and surrounding teeth.

A temporary crown is then placed on the tooth to protect it until you return to your cosmetic dentistry office to receive the permanent restoration. The patient needs to be careful while wearing the temporary crown. Vigorous brushing or flossing can displace the crown or damage the exposed soft tissue. The Grand Rapids dental crown patient should also refrain from eating extremely hard foods like nuts or sticky candy.

The mold of your teeth is sent to a local dental lab where your crown is built. Dental crowns are fabricated in three varieties: tooth colored crowns made of resin or porcelain, porcelain-fused-to-metal, and solid metal crowns. Each type has its pros and cons. Your Comstock Park cosmetic dentists at Stewart & Hull will choose the best crown material for your particular tooth.

What if you need a permanent dental restoration for both the top and root of your tooth? Dental implants are your answer.

For more information about complete dental restorations and other cosmetic dental solutions, call Stewart & Hull at 616-827-7019 today.

Live Better With Dental Implants in Comstock Park

Categories: Dental Implants

Dental Implants Comstock Park Ill-fitting dentures cause more problems for Comstock Park denture wearers than they solve. If you live with loose dentures, you probably regard them as a necessary evil. Though they certainly look better than a toothless mouth, in practical terms they leave much to be desired because they affect two essential activities: eating and talking.

Unfortunately, many frustrated Comstock Park denture wearers have quit dining in restaurants or engaging in social activities because they are afraid their dentures will slip.

Implant dental procedures at Stewart & Hull Aesthetic & General Dentistry in Comstock Park are allowing former denture patients to re-engage in life.

Consider the advantages of implant anchored dentures:

  • They are stable because the implant is anchored in the bone.
  • Your denture is fixed, it will not move around in your mouth.
  • They prevent bone loss that typically occurs when teeth are removed.
  • They eliminate the necessity of regular denture relines.
  • They do not irritate gums.
  • No denture adhesive is required.

Our Comstock Park dental implant bone clients who have replaced their traditional dentures with implant overdentures enthusiastically say that the cost of dental implants was more than worth it.

Do you want to eat normally again? What is the value of maintaining your facial shape? Can you put a price on confidence?

If you want more information about dental implants, call 616-784-2377 to schedule a cosmetic dental consultation with Dr. Bruce Stewart. Stewart & Hull Aesthetic & General Dentistry is located at 769 York Creek Dr NW in Comstock Park. We have been providing advanced cosmetic and general dentistry care since 1974.

Are dental implants right for you?

Categories: Dentistry

If you have missing teeth, it is crucial to replace them. Without all your teeth, chewing and eating can destabilize your bite and cause you discomfort. Dental implants are a great option for replacing missing or badly diseased teeth. A dental implant offers comfort, support, stability, and is as close to a natural tooth that a restoration can be.

There are many benefits to dental implants:

• Dental implants restore your ability to chew food properly.
• They fill out a face that may otherwise look sunken in because of missing teeth.
• They don’t need to be removed for overnight cleaning and soaking.
• No adhesives are needed.
• You’ll feel more confident to show off your smile to the world.
• Each implant is created to fit in perfectly with the look of the rest of your teeth.

Dental implants would be an appropriate treatment for you if you’re in good health, have healthy gums, and have enough bone structure to support an implant. A simple visit with our office will reveal if a dental implant is the best option to restore your smile to its absolute best.
