Regardless of the problem, it is usually ideal to retain your natural teeth. If this is not feasible or you have already lost some teeth, we offer numerous options. We can help you preserve (or regain) your ability to eat, drink, speak, laugh, and smile with confidence!

Dental Veneers

If you still have your teeth, but are not happy with them, these might be the best answer. Stunning veneers offer an affordable approach to cosmetic adjustments – uneven color, size, or shape. These are very thin shells bonded to the front of the teeth.

Dental Implant

An implant is a tooth replacement that includes an artificial tooth PLUS an artificial root. With local anesthesia, the artificial root is inserted into the jaw bone where it integrates with the bone. There are three parts to a dental implant: the artificial root, the connecting abutment, and the final crown, partial or denture.

A dental implant is often the best restoration as it offers beauty, strength, natural function, and protection from bone recession that often occurs at the site of a missing tooth.

Dentures/Partials

Most Belmont, Comstock Park, Grand Rapids, Rockford, Sparta and Walker residents have heard of dentures and partials: a plate holding artificial teeth that can be removed for cleaning. Dentures/partials are customized and can contain varying numbers of teeth. Sometimes the entire set of upper and lower teeth have to be pulled and a denture created. Modern dentistry offers a myriad of custom dental implant-denture combinations to restore missing teeth.

Tooth Whitening: What The ADA Has To Say

Categories: Teeth Whitening

teeth whitening Comstock ParkWhen a cosmetic dentistry procedure becomes popular in the Belmont,  Comstock Park, Grand Rapids, Sparta, Walker and Rockford, MI, areas, it’s natural to want to experience the dramatic results for yourself. However, responsible dental patients should know what the American Dental Association has to say regarding common cosmetic dentistry procedures such as teeth whitening.

The ADA advises patients to meet with their dentist before starting any bleaching regimen. An oral examination that is in-depth will help your dentist to know if tooth whitening is for you. This is especially vital when you have dark stains on your teeth or multiple crowns and/or fillings.

Once you have agreed on a tooth whitening technique, your dentist can supervise your use of whichever bleaching agent you have chosen. This will help you to be sure that the frequency of use of your teeth whitener is never too high.

Or, you and your dentist may choose to have your teeth whitened in the office. Zoom in-office teeth whitening takes much less time than at-home whitening.

Also, if you are shopping for whitening tooth products at your favorite Grand Rapids, Walker, or Sparta drugstore, be sure to look for the ADA Seal of Acceptance.

Along with tooth whitening, there are many other innovative cosmetic dentistry procedures your dentist can recommend, which will help you achieve the dazzling smile you want. These include dental implants, bonding, veneers,  and more!

We are dedicated to oral health and happy patients. We help our cosmetic dental patients love their smile! If you have any questions, please feel free to give us a call at 616-784-2377. A member of the friendly and thorough staff here at Stewart and Hull Aesthetic and General Dentistry would love to set up an appointment for you.

Better Tooth Restoration With Dental Implants

Categories: Dental Implants

dental implants Comstock Park

Tooth loss is not an uncommon problem, and if you are one of the many Comstock Park denture wearers, you know that dentures are not necessarily the best solution for those who are missing teeth.

Even though the dentures of today are dramatically different from those of many years ago, many denture wearers still report having issues with them. Some of the problems with dentures include slipping, gum irritation, trouble eating and talking, bone loss, and inability to taste food because the palate is covered. Ask any denture wearer, and he or she will likely tell you that dentures do not feel and function like natural teeth.

Obviously, by practicing good oral hygiene and going in for regular dental checkups, you might be able to avoid losing your teeth. But the truth is that other factors can make the need for dental replacements a necessity.

There is still good news. Modern dental implant technology offers a better tooth restoration solution. If you have traditional dentures and are not happy with them, you might consider implant anchored dentures. These will dramatically change your life and your chewing ability will also improve.

Before you consider having another denture adjustment, ask Dr. Stewart and Dr. Hull about the possibility of dental implants. Come see us at Stewart and Hull Aesthetic and General Dentistry at 769 York Creek Dr NW in Comstock Park, 49321 for more information about dental implants.

Stick Out Your Tongue In Rockford, MI!

Categories: Oral Health

mother and daughterAs health professionals, we know that Rockford, MI dentists diagnose and treat conditions of the teeth and gums, but we sometimes overlook the importance of the tongue.

Have you ever considered all the amazing things your tongue can do? It helps us talk, perceive the texture and flavor of food, chew, and swallow. This strong and nimble gymnast is in near-constant motion during our waking hours. It is a wonder that we don’t accidentally bite it more often as we smile, chew, drink, breathe, swallow, cough, and laugh.

Your tongue can also reveal problems with your health, including digestive problems, infections, and diseases of the blood.

When Dr. Stewart and Dr. Hull perform oral exams, the tongue is always checked for signs of oral cancer and other serious diseases.

Here are some tongue abnormalities and possible causes:

  • Swollen tongue: reaction to food/drink/medication, strep infection, leukemia, hypothyroidism
  • White tongue: dehydration, yeast infection, irritation to tobacco, enteritis, gastritis, colitis, anemia or other nutritional deficiency
  • Canker sores: may be triggered by stress or reaction to food, toothpaste, or mouthwash.

If you have persistent canker sores, you may want to try eliminating products that contain sodium lauryl (or laurel) sulfate (SLS). SLS is a cheap foaming agent that is found in many personal care products. It can be difficult to find SLS-free dental products in Belmont, Cedar Springs, Grand Rapids, Sparta, Walker and Rockford, MI. The following brands have previously offered SLS-free versions but check labels carefully every time you buy a new tube.

If you can’t find an SLS-free toothpaste at your local grocery store, we would suggest trying health food stores, specialty drug stores, or trusted online sites.

Many of our Rockford, MI patients have asked about tongue-scraping. We recommend thorough dental hygiene including cleaning the tongue. To schedule a consultation to discuss any dental health issues, please call our office at 616-784-2377.

Tooth Restoration: Dental Implants And Dental Bridges

Categories: Dental Implants

smiling woman

When my Comstock Park patients ask me about Comstock Park tooth restoration, I usually tell them about fixed (or ‘traditional’) dental bridges or tooth implants. A dental bridge is an artificial tooth which replaces a missing tooth. The false tooth (called a ‘pontic’) is fused to porcelain crowns on either side of the missing tooth.

Tooth replacement has been a highly requested procedure at my Comstock Park dental practice. Patients from the Belmont, Comstock Park, Grand Rapids, Walker, Sparta and Rockford, MI areas have expressed concern about tooth replacement for many years. Most of my questions have to do with the strength of the tooth replacement and durability.

Most popular are dental implants. A dental implant consists of a titanium post surgically inserted into the jaw bone to replace the root of the missing tooth. The post integrates with the bone to provide a stable foundation for the replacement tooth.

After it has bonded with the bone (it usually takes three to six months), a smaller post is attached. This post extends above the gum line. The artificial tooth (crown) is then attached. The entire process takes several months, but consistently yields terrific results for our patients.

Both Michigan smile restoration options preserve or restore facial contour and allow you to talk and eat normally. Tooth replacements prevent adjoining teeth from gradually shifting and can help correct bite problems, also.

Tooth implants and dental bridges can replace one or more missing teeth. Many Rockford, MI area dental patients have been treated successfully with these tooth restoration alternatives.

Call Stewart and Hull Aesthetic and General Dentistry and ask for Dr. Stewart and Dr. Hull to schedule an evaluation for Michigan tooth restoration. You can schedule your tooth restoration by calling us at 616-784-2377.

perfect smile in Comstock Park

What does it take to really change the way you look? Hours upon hours at the gym? Expensive trips to the most cutting-edge salon in the Comstock Park area? What about a routine trip to your dentist?

You may not love going to the dentist, but you will love the results when they help you find the best way to whiten your teeth. Teeth whitening is a simple cosmetic dentistry procedure with dramatic results that never cease to impress.

Dr. Stewart and Dr. Hull can work with you to develop a teeth whitening regimen that will be most effective. This may include any of the following three methods:

  1. Zoom whitening done in-office. Sometimes called chair-side bleaching, a special light is used while a bleaching agent is applied to the teeth. A rubber shield or protective gel is used to keep your tender gums safe from the whitening agent.
  2. Bleaching at home. Even though this is done at home it is closely monitored by our office to receive the best results.
  3. Kor whitening is a combination of home whitening and a one time in office whitening for optimal results.

Not All Smile Makeovers Are Created Equal

Sparta cosmetic smile makeover

Hello Comstock Park! Welcome to the Stewart and Hull Aesthetic and General Dentistry dental blog. Let’s talk about smile transformations. Some Belmont, Comstock Park, Grand Rapids, Sparta, Walker and Rockford, MI patients wonder if the term is synonymous with general cosmetic dentistry.

Are the placement of four veneers considered a smile makeover? Well, yes and no. If your smile is attractive and healthy except for some chips in your upper front teeth, veneer placement may remedy the few cosmetic problems and result in a celebrity-caliber smile.

Generally, however, a complete smile redesign combines several carefully-chosen cosmetic dentistry procedures performed at the same time for a complete smile renewal. In other words, the sum is greater than the parts.

For example, a cosmetic dental smile makeover could involve crown restorations, veneers for teeth that are misshapen but otherwise healthy, tooth-colored filling replacement for old amalgam fillings, and teeth whitening for the crowning touch.

Dr. Stewart and Dr. Hull. We have been practicing general and cosmetic dentistry in Comstock Park, Michigan since 1974. Performing successful smile makeovers makes our profession extremely fulfilling. Patients who plan to receive a smile makeover should take their time choosing a dentist to perform it. We invite you to schedule a complimentary consultation so we can discuss your needs and wishes. During the consultation, we can tell you about our extensive experience and show you before and after pictures of satisfied patients.

When we design a custom smile makeover, we study several elements in addition to the teeth. After all, the teeth are just one component of the patient’s face. The gumline, lips, mouth, facial shape, facial structure, coloring, and patient’s age affect the scope of the design. This comprehensive approach to a smile makeover achieves incredible results and sets our practice apart.

How to Avoid a Cracked Tooth in Comstock Park

Categories: General Dentistry

cracked toothNo one wants the pain and inconvenience of a cracked tooth so today we are going to focus on ways to prevent this problem.

To avoid a cracked tooth, you should steer clear of chewing on hard.  This includes ice, hard candy, and popcorn.

Also, protect against any impact to the mouth that could be experienced during sporting events. If you are a member of a local basketball, hockey, football or lacrosse league, schedule an appointment for a custom made mouth guard.

Tooth grinding is never a good thing, and it can even lead to a cracked tooth or temporomandibular conditions. Talk to your dentist, about stress reduction techniques to keep your jaw nice and relaxed and see if you would benefit from a custom night time appliance (bitesplint).

Keeping  your regular check-ups with Dr. Stewart and Dr. Hull could predispose you to a cracked tooth such as an uneven chewing surface or brittle teeth. Call our office at 616-827-7311 to schedule a preventative dental consultation and examination at Stewart and Hull Aesthetic and General Dentistry.

If you have a cracked tooth, you’ll want to pursue the correct course of treatment and, if needed, explore some cosmetic dentistry procedures to fix any visible damage such as veneers, a porcelain crown, or a dental implant.
