Does My Dentist Care About My Diet?

Rockford Preventive Dentistry

In this post from Eric Hull DDS Aesthetic & General Dentistry in Comstock Park MI, we are focusing on your dental health. It is important to make sure you’re receiving the important nutrients your body needs.

When we eat healthy, we improve not just our overall health, but our dental health as well! The tissues in our mouth remain healthy, the jaw stays strong, and teeth last a lifetime.

A few years ago, the U.S. Department of Agriculture unveiled the MyPlate graphic to illustrate a healthy diet. Half of our meals should be composed of fruits and vegetables, and the rest should be equally divided between lean protein, whole grains, and low-fat dairy. This will not only ensure that your body remains in balance, but will also benefit your oral health.

When we consume healthy, non-sugary fruits, instead of candy or soda, we are making sure that the gum-line stays fresh and free of acids. The calcium in low-fat dairy products can strengthen the jaw bone while keeping the gums free of fats and sugars. Lean protein and whole grains provide even, non-starchy surfaces, so your teeth are not subjected to any coarseness.

Why Trust Your Smile to Eric Hull Aesthetic & General Dentistry?

Comstock Parkaffordable cosmetic dentistry

Good dental health means having healthy teeth and gums. Maintaining it is something that you have to work at every day.

It can be a real balancing act: using the right oral care products, your personal oral care habits, and seeing us at Eric Hull DDS Aesthetic & General Dentistry in Comstock Park MI at least twice a year.

Your dental health strategy should include:

  1. Daily brushing and flossing. You should brush and floss twice a day. Just before bedtime is especially important, because it cleans out the germs and plaque that build up during the course of the day.
  2. Proper brushing. It’s important not only to brush, but to brush properly. Use a soft-bristled toothbrush in a gentle, circular motion along the gum line. Take your time; a minimum of two minutes is recommended. Don’t forget to brush your tongue!
  3. Using fluoridated toothpaste. There are dozens of choices when it comes to toothpaste. Whether you prefer mint flavored or bubble gum, fluoride is the most important consideration. It can help strengthen your teeth and maintain that smile!
  4. Limiting sugary and acidic foods. Acidic fruits, teas, and coffee contributes to enamel erosion. Sugar converts into acid when it’s in your mouth. You don’t have to avoid these foods entirely, but choose carefully and minimize your intake.
  5. Seeing the dentist twice a year. Your daily dental health care habits are essential, but so is the attention and care of a dentist. A professional tooth cleaning alone is worth the trip, but we can also identify issues before they become serious, and treat them.

At Eric Hull DDS Aesthetic & General Dentistry in Comstock Park MI, we see patients from  Ada, Belmont, Grand Rapids, Sparta, Walker and Rockford, MI. Our services include cosmetic dentistry, general dentistrydental implants, and Invisalign orthodonticsContact us today!

Remake Your Smile With Dental Bonding

Remake Your Comstock Park Smile With Bonding And Shaping

Most of us want to have a more beautiful smile. At Eric Hull DDS Aesthetic & General Dentistry in Comstock Park MI, this is a real possibility. Dental bonding can improve your smile in ways you probably never thought possible!

Traditional Dental Bonding

Dr. Eric Hull uses dental bonding to improve the appearance of teeth that are chipped, cracked, misaligned, or dull/dark.  When teeth are bonded, a tooth-colored material is applied to the tooth surface and is blended with the natural tooth enamel to provide a strong structural support with a natural appearance.

Composite Dental Bonding

A more conservative form of treatment, we can use composite dental bonding to change the color, improve the shape, and shift the contours of your teeth. Different shades and colors of composites are used, including some translucent ones to create a natural looking smile in as little as one visit.

If you’re looking for quality cosmetic dentistry and a focus on patient comfort, look no further than Eric Hull DDS Aesthetic & General Dentistry in Comstock Park MI. Patients from Ada, Belmont, Grand Rapids, Sparta, Walker and Rockford also come to us for general dentistryContact us today!

When Style And Oral Health Collide

ZOOM Whitening in Comstock Park, MI

At Eric Hull DDS Aesthetic & General Dentistry in Comstock Park MI, we focus on cosmetic dentistry and patient-centered dental care. Today, we wanted to talk to you about the potential health benefits that cosmetic dentistry could bring you!

We know that the term ‘cosmetic’ might be fitting, but it can also be misleading. Most cosmetic dentistry procedures actually do double duty! They help you with the aesthetics of your smile and they also improve and maintain your dental health.

Our team has put together this simple list containing the health benefits of procedures that might seem, at first, to be purely cosmetic.

Oral Health Benefits

  • Zoom!® teeth whitening not only helps your smile shine brighter; it also helps keep your teeth healthy by removing stains. This strengthens your enamel and keeps your gums clean.
  • Porcelain veneers might be our most popular cosmetic option, but, in addition to the improvement of aesthetic smile consistency, they can protect the front of your teeth and create long-lasting, structural support for your jaw and teeth.
  • Invisalign® Clear Braces can correct smiles in need of some restructuring. In addition to giving you a red-carpet smile, these help keep your teeth and jaw lined-up and prevent overcrowding, allowing you to easily clean your teeth.
  • Chipped tooth repair can be crucial to your dental health. A cracked or broken tooth that has been repaired helps build a healthy oral ecosystem and keeps your other teeth healthy, too.

Cosmetic dentistry is where oral health and style combine. At Eric Hull DDS Aesthetic & General Dentistry in Comstock Park MI, we serve  patients from Ada, Belmont, Grand Rapids, Sparta, Walker and Rockford, who come to us for these and other cosmetic options, as well as restorative and implant dentistryContact us today to find out how you can look and feel healthier!

What To Expect From Your Dental Checkup

Along with your daily dental health routine, regular checkups at Eric Hull DDS Aesthetic & General Dentistry in Comstock Park MI are essential to maintaining good dental health and the peace of mind that comes with it.

For most patients, we recommend a checkup every six months. Sometimes we need to see a patient more often and sometimes less often. But twice a year is the norm.

Checkups are divided into two parts: the cleaning and the examination.

THE CLEANING

A Professional cleaning of your teeth is done by a hygienist and usually comes before the exam.

  • Teeth and gums are inspected
  • Built-up plaque and tartar are removed
  • Your teeth are polished

Plaque is a filmy, sticky layer of bacteria. You can remove it with daily brushing and flossing, but there may be hard-to-reach areas where some has remained. When it isn’t removed, plaque hardens into tartar. Tartar cannot be removed by brushing and flossing. It can only be removed with special tools, in a process called scaling.

THE EXAM

A dental examination is performed by the dentist. It involves your teeth and gums, as well as an inspection of the tongue, throat, face, head, and neck.

  • Teeth are inspected for cavities
  • Gums are inspected for any sign of gum disease
  • Tongue, throat, and head area are inspected for any signs of cancer

Any issues are usually addressed in a follow-up appointment.

Between checkups, it’s important to brush and floss every single day. Plaque is constantly forming on teeth, but if you remove it every day it shouldn’t cause you any problems.

At Eric Hull Aesthetic & General Dentistry in Comstock Park, MI we offer cosmetic, general, and implant dentistry. People from Ada, Belmont, Comstock Park, Grand Rapids, Sparta, Walker and Rockford, MI also come to us for Invisalign® orthodontics. Please call to schedule a cleaning and checkup today!

Regular Cleanings And Heart Health

Comstock Park Dental News Regular Cleanings And Heart Health

Visiting Eric Hull DDS Aesthetic & General Dentistry in Comstock Park for a dental checkup and cleaning every six months may seem inconvenient sometimes, but you may benefit in ways you’d never imagine.

A recent study showed that people who had their teeth professionally cleaned at least once every two years were 24 percent less likely to have a heart attack, compared to those who skipped appointments.

Not only that, but brushing your teeth twice a day for at least two minutes may lower your risk of heart disease. The study says that people who brushed less than twice a day, and for less than two minutes, were three times as likely to have heart issues than those who brushed at least twice, and for at least two minutes.

A cardiologist who was not associated with the study said it’s possible that those who are attentive to their dental health may simply be more health conscious overall.

Still, researchers believe it strengthens the notion that there is a clear link between your dental health and your overall health.

At Eric Hull DDS Aesthetic & General Dentistry in Comstock Park we encourage all our patients to brush their teeth for two minutes at least twice a day, and to floss, too. It’s the best way to keep cavities at bay. People from Ada, Belmont, Grand Rapids, Sparta, Walker and Rockford, MI come to our practice for family and cosmetic dentistry, Invisalign clear braces, and much more. Want To Keep Your Enamel Healthy? Avoid Doing These 11 Things

cosmetic dentistry Comstock ParkTooth enamel is the hardest part of the human body, but that doesn’t mean teeth are indestructible. Far from it! To keep them healthy and problem-free, the team at Eric Hull DDS Aesthetic & General Dentistry in Comstock Park recommends (strongly!) you avoid the following.

1. Chewing on hard foods

We’re looking at you, unpopped popcorn kernels and hard candy.

2. Chewing on hard things

This includes fingernails, pencils, pen caps, and ice.

3. Grinding your teeth

If you grind your teeth, ask us about an oral appliance.

4. Eating too much sticky food

Gummy candy, dried fruit, and even protein bars can break teeth.

5. Drinking lots of anything besides water

If your teeth are constantly bathed in soda (sugared or diet), juice, coffee, or sports drinks, you are asking for dental issues.

6. Playing sports without a mouthguard

Sports pose a major risk of tooth damage. Most children are required to wear a protective mouthguard on the playing field, but adults tend to be less vigilant. (Custom-fitted mouthguards are more comfortable and provide more protection than the cheap boil-and-bite type.)

7. Using a hard-bristled toothbrush

A hard-bristled tooth brush can weaken teeth and cause gums to pull away. We recommend a soft (or extra-soft) toothbrush!

8. Ignoring dry mouth

Saliva is important. It helps to rinse food particles from your mouth as well as neutralize the acids that cause plaque. Constant dry mouth (xerostomia) can lead to tooth decay. Talk to us if you have persistent dry mouth.

9. Using teeth as tools

Take a minute to find a pair of scissors before you tear open a package of lunch meat or pry the lid off of a medicine bottle. Use a nutcracker if you are eating shelled nuts.

10. Ignoring bad breath

Bad breath might be a symptom of accelerating tooth decay or periodontal disease. Please discuss it with us.

11. Ignoring jaw pain

If you suffer from jaw pain or notice a clicking sound, be sure to let us know! These can be signs of a condition called temporomandibular disorder (TMD).

If you’ve damaged a tooth, come see us at Eric Hull DDS Aesthetic & General Dentistry in Comstock Park. We offer complete general dentistry services, and have helped patients throughout Ada, Belmont, Grand Rapids, Sparta, Walker and Rockford, MI. We also offer Invisalign clear braces, cosmetic and implant dentistry. Call to schedule an appointment with us today!!
