Eat Like A Dentist: Dental Health in Comstock Park

Kentwood cosmetic dental and tooth implants

Nothing impacts your dental health quite like your eating habits. At Stewart & Hull At Stewart & Hull Aesthetic & General Dentistry in Comstock Park we want you to develop good eating habits and nutrition. Your teeth and your smile will thank you.

1. Rinse after eating

Rinse your mouth with a swish of water after meals. Better yet, brush and floss your teeth. People who snack all day long subject their teeth to sugars and food debris. Planned meals with brushing and flossing in between keeps your oral health on top.

2. Avoid sugary gum

Sugar free gum doesn’t leave sugar to break down on your teeth and jeopardize your hard earned healthy gums. If you are gum chewer, do your smile a favor and go sugarless.

3. Avoid sticky foods

Sticky foods have a way of clinging to your teeth, which puts you at risk of decay. Toffee, gummy candy, fruit snacks, even excessive dried fruit can be ill-advised for smiles. Brushing doesn’t always eliminate the obstinate particles, so remember to floss after eating sticky items.

4. Consume nutritious foods

A balanced diet with a variety of vitamins and minerals can keep the immune system durable and able to combat infection.

5. Say ‘cheese!’

Cheese contains calcium and protects teeth from acid that weakens tooth enamel. If you’re lactose intolerant, consider calcium-rich alternatives like seeds (poppy and sesame, for example) and almonds. Floss afterward!

6. Avoid acidic foods

Acid will eat away at enamel over time: lemons, red wine, soda pop. Limit direct, constant, consistent exposure. All things in moderation.

Wayward Teeth: Invisalign Clear Braces in Comstock Park

Malocclusion is the technical term for crooked teeth. When you consider all the different ways teeth can grow, it is not surprising that malocclusion occurs in multiple forms. Stewart & Hull Aesthetic & General Dentistry in Comstock Park can correct malocclusion with Invisalign clear braces.

When teeth slant forward, it is called upper protrusion, but you may have heard this referred to, unkindly, as “buck teeth.”

An overbite is when the upper front teeth come down too far over the lower teeth when the mouth is closed. An underbite is the reverse impairment – the upper front teeth close further back than the lower front teeth. An open bite refers to a bite in which the upper don’t overlap the lower teeth. This can happen on the whole bite or just one side.

Tooth rotation is one of the most common types of malocclusion. Rotated teeth appear as if they are twisting out of place. Tooth rotation can create the illusion of uneven coloring because of the way light reflects off the face of teeth.

When the upper and lower palate are out of alignment to the point where the upper teeth close onto the wrong side of the lower teeth, it is called a cross bite.

In some rare cases, teeth erupt in spots where other teeth should be. This is known as transposition. For example, a canine (pointed tooth) comes in where an incisor (front biting tooth) should be.

Many people with crooked teeth are too self-conscious to smile, but aesthetics are not the only issue at play. Crooked teeth are more difficult to keep clean and can increase the chance of tooth decay, tooth damage, and temporomandibular joint disorder (TMD).

Teeth can be aligned more easily and less obtrusively than ever before with Invisalign.  Invisalign clear braces are a series of trays that gradually correct the bite and straighten the teeth. People love them because they are not very noticeable and are removable, making it easier to brush and floss.

Dental Hygiene in Comstock Park: When You’re Too Tired To Brush

Rockford gentle dentist

Too tired to lift a toothbrush? We’ve all been there. But does anyone really want to sacrifice dental hygiene?

At Stewart & Hull Aesthetic & General Dentistry in Comstock Park, we are committed to helping patients maintain balanced dental hygiene and correct imperfections that can lead to inhibited confidence and self-assurance.

Here are two quick ideas for overcoming exhaustion in favor of brushing and flossing late at night.

Idea #1 Drag Tongue Along Teeth
After a long day, as you lie in bed and realize you forgot to brush, drag your tongue over your teeth a few times. As you do, think about how plaque and tartar form. Within 48 hours they can start the dirty work of eating away at the teeth. Tooth decay and gum disease can begin to develop. So jump up and give your mouth just 2 minutes of gentle, thorough cleaning.

Idea #2 Scrutinize the Food You Eat
Another convenient and manageable approach is to pay attention to what’s going into your mouth throughout the day. The higher the sugar content, the sooner your teeth need a brushing to avoid harm. Swish with water after coffee, tea or soda if brushing isn’t going to happen soon. Chewing sticky candy, or dried fruit like raisins, leaves debris in the mouth, as does bread and crackers. Keep this in mind and commit to take care of the particles as soon as possible.

Shredded meat can remain lodged between teeth for days if you don’t pull it out with floss. Plan to floss or brush after eating if possible. With each particular type of food, learn to assess the effect it could have on your teeth. Make the decision to brush before you are tired. By simply visualizing and committing, you reduce the likelihood of hemming and hawing when you’re yawning and fading, and have to choose between settling into bed and spending 2 minutes cleaning your teeth.

A long day of work or play can wear out anyone. Consistent brushing and flossing reduces buildup and helps prevent decay and gum disease.

Some smile problems can be prevented, but in spite of our best efforts, some just cannot. A complimentary consultation with one of our dentists can open your eyes to the unique possibilities for your stunning smile. A few options for cosmetic dentistry that we offer at Stewart & Hull Aesthetic & General Dentistry are porcelain veneers, Invisalign clear braces, and Zoom! teeth whitening.  If we each do our part to keep your smile healthy and beautiful, then all of us can sleep at night.

Invisalign: The Future of Orthodontics Is Here Today!

Invisalign Comstock Park

When most people think of braces, they picture an adolescent with a mouth full of metal. They also imagine going through years of painful orthodontics.

Not with Invisalign invisible braces! With Invisalign, your braces not only involve no brackets or metal, but they are virtually undetectable. Most people won’t even realize you are wearing them!

How Does Invisalign Work?

Invisalign works with custom, plastic trays that are changed out every one to two weeks. While you wear them, your teeth are gradually moved into the desired alignment.

Unlike with traditional metal braces, you will have no eating restrictions with Invisalign because they are removable. Simply take them out at meal time.

Cleaning your teeth is easy as well. You can floss and brush normally, then pop the aligners back into your mouth.

If you have an important occasion or are being photographed, you can remove the aligners for these special events. In order for your treatment to be successful, however, you do need to commit to wearing the aligners for a specific number of hours each day.

If you are considering braces, please call our office to schedule a complimentary consultation to discuss Invisalign clear braces. Straight teeth are one very important aspect of a beautiful, healthy smile, and there’s no better way to straighten teeth than with Invisalign.

Getting straight teeth has never been easier than it is at Stewart & Hull Aesthetic & General Dentistry in Comstock Park.

Frequently Asked Questions About Invisalign!

Are you wondering what Invisalign treatment is really like, and what effect it will have on your day-to-day activities? Will it slur your speech? Will people know you’re in treatment? You’re not alone in your concerns! Dr. Stewart and Dr. Hull and the rest of our team thought we’d share this list of questions and answers for anyone considering Invisalign treatment at Stewart and Hull Aesthetic and General Dentistry.

How exactly does Invisalign work?

Using 3-D computer imaging technology, Invisalign creates a series of custom-made, clear aligners exclusively for your teeth, based on the treatment plan that we specify for you. Each aligner moves teeth incrementally and is worn for about two weeks, then replaced by the next in the series until the final position is achieved.

Will I experience pain during treatment?

Most people experience temporary discomfort for a few days after a new aligner is placed. This feeling of pressure is normal and is a sign that Invisalign is working by sequentially moving your teeth to their final destination.

How often must I wear my aligners?

Aligners should be worn all day, except when eating, brushing, and flossing.

Will my speech be affected by the aligners?

As with any orthodontic treatment, aligners may temporarily affect your speech. If this does happen, your tongue will adjust within a day or two and your speech should return to normal.

It’s Not Too Late To Get Them Straight

Straighten Your Teeth With Invisalign Near Rockford MI

Are you an adult the Grand Rapids area with misaligned teeth? Do you regret not having orthodontic treatment when you were a teen? It’s not too late to straighten your teeth.

Invisalign and Six Month Smiles are two different programs for straightening teeth which are commonly used in cosmetic dental practices in the Grand Rapids, Comstock Park and Rockford MI areas.

Invisalign ‘Invisible braces’ work well for many Comstock Park men and women of all ages. Invisalign is the trade name of a proprietary orthodontic system used in the Michigan dental community.  Patients wear clear, practically invisible, custom-molded aligners which are changed every two weeks until the teeth are straightened.

Six Month Smiles provides tooth colored porcelain brackets with a tooth colored wire with an estimated treatment time of 6-8 months.

Once the orthodontic treatment has been completed, a retainer will be necessary. Invisalign Vivera retainers are clear removable retainers that will keep your teeth in alignment. Some Grand Rapids patients believe clear retainers are more comfortable than other types.

If you want more beautiful teeth, call Stewart & Hull in Comstock Park for a free consultation. Dr. Stewart and Dr. Hull will examine your teeth and recommend the most effective system for you.

Stewart & Hull is a full-service general, family, and cosmetic dental practice. We meet and exceed our patients’ expectations. Ask us about cosmetic dentistry, restorative dentistry, and implant dentistry.

Invisalign — Exciting Changes

I want to make you aware of some exciting changes with Invisalign, the clear trays (aligners) used to straighten teeth. I’ve been using Invisalign for almost eight years with good success and predictability.

Invisalign has an engineering team and they have redesigned their use of attachments and how they redirect single teeth. Engineers are trained in studying forces, speed, movement and shape. Who would be better suited to study tooth movement? By analyzing tooth shape from millions of case submissions, the engineers can move teeth with greater predictability. This is done in the laboratory and translated to the software.

Invisalign formerly offered two levels of straightening: Full Case, 11 or more aligners, and Express Case, 10 or fewer aligners. They have added a new level, Express 5, 5 or fewer aligners for minor tooth correction. Aligners are changed every two weeks, so an Express 5 Case would be complete in ten weeks.

Invisalign was a good product, but now it is an even better product. If you have been considering straightening your teeth, come in for a consultation and see what Invisalign can do for you.

– Dr. Bruce Stewart

Ask Dr. Stewart: What can Invisalign® do for my oral health?

When considering treatment options, patients often ask us how Invisalign treatment is so different than traditional braces. Well, there are more reasons to smile about Invisalign with Dr. Stewart than you may know. Invisalign is a series of removable aligners that are nearly invisible, and besides straightening your teeth, can improve your oral health. Here’s how:

Healthy Gums: Straight teeth allow a close fit for gums. This lessens the gum stress that is caused by crowded or widely spaced teeth, thus also reducing red and swollen gums.

Easy cleaning: Invisalign is removable, therefore brushing and flossing is easier and you are able to maintain a healthy mouth. These habits are vital to avoiding tooth decay, plaque and even gum disease.

Improved speech and chewing: Properly-aligned teeth don’t have the discomfort or compound speech impediments that can be caused by crowded teeth or a deteriorating jawbone.

If you have any questions about Invisalign, just ask Dr. Stewart the next time you’re in for an appointment. Or, you may post your question on our Facebook page! You can also read this article for more information on Invisalign and your oral health.
