Super Smiles Have Strong Enamel

Did you know that enamel is the hardest substance in the body? It’s true! This substance, found on the outer surface of your teeth, truly should last a lifetime. But just because it’s super strong doesn’t mean you don’t have to work to take care of it.

Here are some beneficial tips for keeping enamel healthy.

Pick the right foods for enamel health. It’s no secret that soft drinks damage your teeth, and don’t think that diet sodas are harmless – the acid can erode enamel over time. There are also other culinary culprits that can do a lot of harm. Sticky, chewy candies should be avoided. Chewing ice is a no-no. And don’t use your teeth as tools. Take a minute to grab some scissors before you rip open that package with your incisors.

On the flip side, foods with calcium can neutralize acid in your mouth and preserve your enamel. So, enjoy your dairy products like milk, cheese and yogurt!

Avoid vigorous brushing and use a soft brush. If your teeth are discolored or yellowish, you may feel you need to brush harder. Instead, think about teeth whitening and speak with your dentist.
Keep stomach acids in check. If you have a problem with severe heartburn, the stomach acid could be traveling up your esophagus and into your mouth. This acid can erode enamel, so it is important to meet with your doctor about treatment.
Talk to your dentist about dry mouth and tooth grinding. Lack of saliva can cause major trouble for tooth enamel, and it’s no surprise that teeth grinding can also wear enamel. Make sure your dentist is aware if you experience either of these issues.

Protect Those Nooks And Crannies

We’re passionate about the prevention of dental caries, which is the foundation for a healthy and beautiful smile. Preventative dentistry such as brushing, flossing, and regular dental cleanings with a dental hygienist are vital for keeping your smile bright and free of cavities. There are some places where enamel damage can occur even with dedicated oral hygiene.

The very back of the mouth is the most problematic area to brush and floss. Deep pits in molars and spaces between teeth are the perfect environment for dental caries to flourish. While brushing and flossing frequently is critical, an additional safeguard against dental caries is the application of dental sealants. Suspect A Bite Problem?

Edward Angle, a pioneer in modern orthodontics, invented the term malocclusion. Malocclusion is fairly common and in most cases the misalignment is so slight that it does not cause problems.

When you combine multiple teeth on two arches and a jaw joint with a considerable range of motion, it is easy to see how these elements can fail to align properly. In fact, it is a wonder that they work correctly for most people – allowing them to talk, eat, and breathe without giving it a second thought.

There are many causes of malocclusion – some originating with the teeth and some originating with the jaw. Misshapen teeth, extracted teeth, impacted teeth, crowded teeth, widely spaced teeth and injury to the jaw can impact the bite.

Children with a normal bite can develop bite problems with prolonged pacifier use, thumb sucking or bottle drinking. In rarer cases, oral tumors can move a bite out of alignment.

The treatment for malocclusion depends on the cause. Orthodontics can move teeth into alignment to correct bite trouble. Misshapen teeth that affect the bite can often be fixed with crowns or dental bonding.

Why a Water Flosser Might be a Good Idea

Today, we’re highlighting the water flosser, also known as interdental cleaner, interdental irrigator, or water jet. The first water-shooting device for cleaning between teeth was created in the early 1960’s by Colorado dentist Dr. Gerald Moyer and John Mattingly, a hydraulics engineer. The gadget is now known by the brand name Waterpik, though many people use the term generically. Since its inception, many other companies have entered the market with similar products. (Note: Stewart and Hull Aesthetic and General Dentistry does not necessarily endorse any particular brand.)

A water irrigation device oscillates a stream of water through a small, targeted tube to shoot out bits of food and plaque from around and between teeth. To use it, you put the tube into your mouth, turn it on, and then lean over the sink with your mouth slightly open to let the water dribble out as you maneuver the stream of shooting water around the gumline, pausing momentarily at each gap between neighboring teeth.

There have been over 65 studies that have confirmed the safety and effectiveness of water flossing for calculus reduction, plaque biofilm removal, bleeding reduction, inflammation reduction, and gingivitis treatment.

Oral Health For Comstock Park Diabetics

Many people with diabetes have dental problems. However, gum disease, tooth loss, and periodontal disease are avoidable.

Blood sugar is the complicating factor. Diabetics who control their blood sugar have lower rates of dental problems. In fact, many dentists have noticed no increased risk of dental disease among diabetics who maintain healthy blood sugar levels.

When blood sugar levels rise, the amount of sugars and starches increase in your mouth. These substances combine with the bacteria naturally present to create enamel-eroding plaque. Untreated plaque creates cavities.

In addition to cavities, dental patients with diabetes need to be vigilant about gum health. Because diabetes can make it harder to control the growth of bacteria, the amount of plaque in your mouth can multiply quicker. Plaque not only causes cavities, it inflames and weakens gum tissue and eventually the bone surrounding teeth.

Untreated gum disease progresses to periodontitis, a more severe infection. Because diabetics have a lower resistance to infection, it can be difficult to reverse periodontitis in people with diabetes.
