Sealants…A Proven Way to Fight Decay

Sealants are a thin coat of clear resin that is applied to the biting surfaces of teeth. Teeth with deep pits and grooves can easily trap bacteria that can later lead to decay. Sealants fill in the pits and grooves to create a smooth surface. Dr. Stewart and Dr. Hull recommend sealants on permanent, unrestored, back teeth for patients of all ages; from young children to mature adults. Sealants are usually placed on the molars of our pediatric patients but in some cases anterior (front) teeth can benefit from sealants.

Dental sealants protect teeth that have no decay (primary prevention) and also prevent further decay progression in teeth that show very early signs of disease (secondary prevention).

Dental Implants: Beneficial for Many Ages

The Science of Dental Implants Has Greatly Improved

In 1952, Per-Ingvar Branemark accidentally discovered that bone integrates with titanium while conducting a completely different experiment that had to do with blood flow characteristics. During the experiment, the scientist had to implant titanium into the bones of rabbits to be able to conduct his experiment. At the end of his project, he went to remove these implants that he had placed but he couldn’t remove them very easily. He discovered that the bone and the titanium had integrated together, and he coined the term “osseointegration” to explain the phenomenon. From this discovery, the world of hip replacements, knee replacements and our favorite dental implants opened.

Since the discovery of osseointegration, there have been multiple advances that have improved the success rate of single dental implants and implant supported dentures. One of the advances is the finish of the titanium on the dental implant. Initial dental implant procedures utilized titanium screws with a very smooth surface. Dentists now use implants with a treated surface that leaves a porous finish and inherently increases the surface area available for integration.

Cavity Fighting Chewing Gum For Our Comstock Park Patients?

Our Comstock Park and Rockford area patients often ask us if chewing xylitol gum is an effective substitute for tooth brushing and regular dental exams.

Before we answer that question, let us tell you about xylitol:

Xylitol is a natural sweetener that was first discovered in birch tree bark but is also found in many fruits and vegetables. Unlike most other sweeteners (natural or synthetic), xylitol is actually good for your teeth. Numerous clinical studies have demonstrated that xylitol prevents the growth of the bacteria that initiates decay. It also reduces plaque and strengthens tooth enamel.

Xylitol has other benefits, as well. Because it is low on the glycemic index, many of our Grand Rapids diabetic patients enjoy it as a healthy alternative to sugar. If our Rockford MI cosmetic dentistry patients complain about frequent dry mouth, we recommend Xylitol gum or mints to stimulate saliva production without promoting tooth decay.

Now, is xylitol gum just as effective as brushing your teeth and seeing your Rockford MI family dentist regularly? Absolutely not! If you cannot brush your teeth after a meal, chewing xylitol gum for five or ten minutes is probably a good idea.
