The Stewart and Hull Aesthetic and General Dentistry Guide To Dental X-Rays

Don’t know a periapical from a bitewing? Today’s dental blog takes a look at dental

x-rays.

Panoramic
If you have ever stood in a huge camera apparatus and struggled to stay motionless while an automated camera made one slow pass around your head, then you have had a panoramic x-ray taken of your mouth. These pictures help dentists see everything in one image: the complete upper and lower jaw. These are often taken during a patient’s first visit to Stewart and Hull Aesthetic and General Dentistry. They are also very helpful for evaluating jaw injuries, calcification in the carotid artery, tumors and seeing emerging teeth in children.

Bitewing
Bitewing x-rays help Dr. Stewart and Dr. Hull see what’s going on between teeth and evaluate the bone levels supporting the teeth – something that is always needed but impossible with a visual exam.

Periapical
These are similar to bitewing x-rays but they can get a clearer picture of the tooth roots and bone. These are often used to help diagnose an abscess in the root of a tooth.

Full-Mouth Series
This is a combination of periapical and bitewing x-rays that gives a comprehensive picture of all the teeth and surrounding bone structure.

If you are pregnant and need a dental x-ray at Stewart and Hull Aesthetic and General Dentistry, it is essential to let Dr. Stewart and Dr. Hull know this before x-rays are taken. X-rays are not necessarily dangerous for pregnant women, but they are often postponed until after delivery as a precaution. If you are pregnant but have a dental issue, call our office right away. We can be reached at 616-784-2377.

We hope you have learned a little bit about dental x-rays, one of Dr. Stewart and Dr. Hull’s indispensable tools in providing unsurpassed dental care in Comstock Park. Check back often for more specifics about dentistry at Stewart and Hull Aesthetic and General Dentistry.

How to Avoid a Cracked Tooth in Comstock Park

Categories: General Dentistry

cracked toothNo one wants the pain and inconvenience of a cracked tooth so today we are going to focus on ways to prevent this problem.

To avoid a cracked tooth, you should steer clear of chewing on hard.  This includes ice, hard candy, and popcorn.

Also, protect against any impact to the mouth that could be experienced during sporting events. If you are a member of a local basketball, hockey, football or lacrosse league, schedule an appointment for a custom made mouth guard.

Tooth grinding is never a good thing, and it can even lead to a cracked tooth or temporomandibular conditions. Talk to your dentist, about stress reduction techniques to keep your jaw nice and relaxed and see if you would benefit from a custom night time appliance (bitesplint).

Keeping  your regular check-ups with Dr. Stewart and Dr. Hull could predispose you to a cracked tooth such as an uneven chewing surface or brittle teeth. Call our office at 616-827-7311 to schedule a preventative dental consultation and examination at Stewart and Hull Aesthetic and General Dentistry.

If you have a cracked tooth, you’ll want to pursue the correct course of treatment and, if needed, explore some cosmetic dentistry procedures to fix any visible damage such as veneers, a porcelain crown, or a dental implant.

Beware Of An Acidic Diet

Categories: General Dentistry

Rockford MI tooth strengthening

Most Belmont, Comstock Park, Grand Rapids, Sparta, Walker and Rockford MI residents don’t often think of a tooth as a body part that fluctuates in strength. Our teeth seem to have a steady hardness and dependably grind food whenever we need them. However, teeth are dynamic organisms with chemical processes that occur continually.

The protective enamel that covers the softer interior is made of minerals. Enamel demineralizes (loses some of its density) when coming in contact with acids. Saliva can dilute and neutralize acid so the tooth can remineralize (re-harden). This process isn’t instantaneous, however. While the enamel is soft, the tooth is vulnerable to losing a microscopic outer layer of enamel. If the erosion continues, the much softer dentin is exposed.

At Stewart & Hull Aesthetic & General Dentistry, we are noticing an increase in cases of serious acid erosion. It is apparent that the typical Rockford MI diet is becoming more acidic.

The list of acidic foods may surprise you. They include eggs, gravy, asparagus, chicken, cottage cheese, honey, fish, ham, butter, sour cream, aged cheese, and yogurt with active cultures. Generally, food with a high sugar or artificial sweetener content are highly acidic.

You probably already know that soda pop and wine are not good for your teeth. Rockford MI teens that sip soda all day can have acid erosion while their young teeth should be at their strongest. In addition to soda, energy drinks are very popular in Michigan and Rockford MI cosmetic dentists are noticing the effects on their dental patients’ tooth enamel.

If you drink soda or energy drinks often, you may want to drink water or chew sugarless gum afterwards. Stimulating saliva production can speed up the remineralization process.

If your teeth have become more sensitive in general, or in response to hot or cold foods or beverages, you may have acid erosion. To schedule an examination with Dr. Stewart and Dr. Hull at Stewart and Hull Aesthetic and General Dentistry, call 616-784-2377 today.

We are working to raise awareness of the oral health dangers of acid erosion. We hope you have benefited from this Stewart and Hull Aesthetic and General Dentistry blog article and look forward to your visit.

Rockford MI Dental Patients, Take Care Of Your Toothbrush!

Categories: General Dentistry

Rockford MI Dental Patients Take Care Of Your Toothbrush! The common household toothbrush. Every home has at least one, and hopefully all Rockford, Belmont, Comstock Park, Grand Rapids, Sparta and Walker residents are brushing their teeth after each meal. While cosmetic dentistry and a complete smile makeovers seem to be all the rage these days, daily brushing is still the most important thing you can do for your oral health. It has been said that each toothbrush can contain millions of bacteria. But don’t worry, those bacteria come from our mouths, which harbor equal amounts of bacteria. For a person with a healthy immune system, these bacteria pose no threat.

However, a few common sense tips might keep any unnecessary germs from affecting the toothbrushes of Grand Rapids area dental patients.

First, be sure to store your toothbrush as far away from the toilet as possible, and close the toilet lid before flushing. Each flush of the toilet releases a spray of bacteria into the air, so it’s best to just eliminate the spray. Next, since bacteria like a moist environment, store your toothbrush upright and without a travel case so that it can dry completely between uses. The American Dental Association recommends replacing your toothbrush every three to four months. Brushing and flossing are the key to good oral health, and doing both each day will keep Rockford MI dental patients’ risk for gum disease, cavities, and bad breath low.

Keep your smile bright by visiting Stewart & Hull Aesthetic & General Dentistry regularly and practicing proper oral hygiene.

Our office has been serving the Belmont, Comstock Park, Grand Rapids, Sparta, Walker and Rockford areas since 1974. We can answer any questions you have about cosmetic dentistry procedures such as tooth whitening, porcelain veneers, dental implants, and clear braces. Call to schedule an appointment today!

5 Cavity Basics For Our Dental Patients

Rockford MI General Dentistry - Cavity Basics

However, the desire to avoid cavities is still the main reason Belmont, Comstock Park, Grand Rapids, Sparta, Walker and Rockford, MI residents visit Dr. Stewart and Dr. Hull, so today our blog is going to highlight the 5 things you need to know about cavities.

1. Cavities can also be called caries or tooth decay. When a tooth is permanently damaged in the hard surface, tiny openings occur. These little holes are cavities.

2. Factors that contribute to tooth decay are:

Frequent eating
Consuming sugary beverages
Oral bacteria
Teeth that haven’t been cleaned well

3. Cavities may get so bad that you will see pits or holes in your teeth, but symptoms may be more subtle, such as sensitivity, stain, pain when biting, or a toothache. If you experience any of these symptoms, you should call Dr. Stewart and Dr. Hull today for an appointment.

4. Cavities are more common among children, but that doesn’t mean adults don’t have to take precautions.

5. Preventing cavities is simple. Be sure to brush twice a day with a fluoride toothpaste, floss daily, eat right and avoid snacking, and have regular visits with your dentist.
